Rating

The new, Apple iPod shuffle 2nd generation is an ultra-simple music player.

It's tiny yet it can store up to 240 of your favorite songs.

At 1.07 x 1.62 x 0.41 inches and weighing 0.6 ounce, the iPod shuffle is one minuscule music player and comes in five vibrant colours:

It incorporates a built-in clip that lets you attach it to your pocket, shirt or belt. If you're a gym enthusiast it'll be a hit because you can forget about lanyards flapping round your neck.

The lack of display won't bother the mobile keep-fit brigade, but it isn't for those who like to select individual tunes while on the move. Despite its name, you don't have to use the shuffle mode; you can also set ordered playlists, navigable via the familiar iPod scroll wheel.

Sound quality is excellent. With 1GB of storage, Apple iPod shuffle 2nd generation can hold up to 1000 minutes of music and fully supports iTunes.

Battery life is around 12 hours per full charge. An included USB 2.0 dock connects it to a
computer for charging, and iTunes AutoFill feature automatically syncs the shuffle with new
music each time you connect. Unlike its predecessor, the new dock syncs through the headphone socket rather than via a USB 2.0 connection.

This means that the dock becomes vital and the shuffle is less useful now as a USB memory stick (unless you carry the dock around with you wherever you go).

Verdict

If you like your music playback simple and your device nearly invisible, the second-generation iPod Shuffle will suit you well.
