Before you choose which iPod model is suitable for you, you need to know:

Why buy an ultraportable?

iPods are so small and light you'll hardly notice you are carrying them - making them ideal exercise and short-breaks companions.

They use solid-state storage instead of the hard disks used by larger, 'jukebox' players, which aids their portability further.

With no moving parts, it will only be you skipping and jogging, not the music.

Solid storage is also less battery-hungry than hard-disk designs.

There are, of course, compromises. With notable exceptions, sound quality can't match bigger players - not helped by the fact that you're likely to rip your music files at lower bit rates to fit more tracks on the player.

But if you're happy to regularly refresh your players library, ultraportables like the iPod is terrific value.

Why buy hard-disk recorder?

Apple's hard disk recorders give you storage capacity ranging from 1GB (good for storing 120 songs) up to a massive 160GB (40,000 songs), and most can display your digital photos and videos too.

Often they come with a large color screen that makes it a best buy iPod.

Battery life on early iPods was poor, but the newer models are much better - expect up to 40 hours on the 160GB model.

How easy is it to operate?

The Apple click-wheel is usually held as model of ergonomics and in conjunction with the latest players' bright, clear color screens makes operation simple indeed.

Should I buy a case for safety?

Yes, especially when buying an iPod such as the iPod touch... or... the iPod classic because if you're spending about $249 or so on a player, a case is probably a wise investment.
