Screen looks like "bar code"

First of all, I see that I'm not the only person that is experiencing this problem. For no apparent reason, my iPod nano started displaying a weird screen that looks like a bar code. It still works ok, that is, still plays fine, but I can't see what's playing and have to work the controls blindly. If I reset, the screen returns to normal and will stay ok until it's shut off and turned on again. Then it's back to the bar code. I've reset, restarted, loaded the updated software and tried every USB port on my computer with no luck. Is it a failure that's built into the iPod and a lost cause ?
